Was ist ein "Blowfish" ?
In jüngster Zeit hat sich eine Diskussion darüber ergeben, was denn nun eigentlich ein "Blowfish" im Sinne von Lars Ivarsson sei. Die Abbildung in der Mitte zeigt ganz eindeutig einen "echten" Blowfish (rechts). Diese ist durch einen steil aufragenden, breiten Holm ("Flosse") und durch eine in den Kopf einlaufende, scharfe Kante gekennzeichnet.
Die Pfeifen mit einem umlaufenden "Cross-grain-Band" (links) und vergleichsweise flachem Kopf mit Birdeyes an den Kopfseiten sollten besser als "Disc" bezeichnet werden. Rainer Barbi wies darauf hin, dass diese Pfeifenform älter als der "Blowfish" ist und von Former in dieser Weise bekannt gemacht wurde. Nach Robert Schrire, einem namhaften Sammler und Autor aus Kapstadt, ist allerdings auch diese Form von von Lars Ivarsson und, unabhängig davon, auch von Jörn Micke entwickelt worden.
Die Diskrepanz bei der Benennung der Pfeifenformen kommt vermutlich daher, dass Lars Ivarsson einige seiner "Cross-Grain"-Pfeifen mit dem Sonderstempel "Fish" versehen hat (s.u.), der eigentlich unabhängig von der Form der Pfeife ist. In einem vielgelesenen Artikel über Lars Ivarsson, war dann eine ähnliche "Cross Grain" Pfeife abgebildet, während der Kontext des Artikels vermuten ließ, es handele sich um einen "Blowfish".
"Blowfishes" and "Fish-awarded " Lars Ivarsson-Pipes
Quite recently, a discussion has arisen, what shape is called “blowfish” in the meaning of Lars Ivarsson. The figure shows quite obviously a "genuine" Blowfish (on the right). The pipe on the left should be marked better as "disc", showing a circulating "Cross-grain ribbon" and a comparatively flat bowl with Birdeyes at both the sides. According to Rainer Barbi, this pipe shape is older than the "Blowfish" and was introduced by Former. According to the Cape Town based master-collector Robert Schrire, this "cross-grain" shape was introduced by Lars, and, indepentent on Lars, also by Jorn Micke.
The discrepancy with the shape names may be caused by the fact, that Lars awarded some of his best "Cross Grain" pipes with the additional "Fish" stamp. This rare stamp is independent of the shape but dependent of the quality of the pipe only. In addition, there was an often quoted article in an American pipe-related journal showing a picture of a gorgeous "fish awarded" cross-grain pipe, while the context of the aricle led to the conclusion, this picture displays a "Blowfish".
